The Long Tail of Major League Baseball

Opening day is just around the corner.  Another season filled with the ups and downs of the teams and the players.  If the Long Tail is all about selling less to more how does that apply to MLB?  Well in the case of MLB or any professional sport for that matter as the prices of everything from the seats, parking, drinks, hot dogs and beer has gone through the roof baseball has changed.  In fact there are a lot more people going a lot less often to games just because of the costs.  Season tickets are now purchased by groups of people and shared.  Hot dogs and beer are consumed less often by more people.  Last year 76,000,000 people saw a major league game.  I wonder how many of those people only went to one game or a few games compared to say 10 years ago.  My guess is a lot.  Its just to expensive for a family to go to that many games.  I remember when the parking was FREE now (last time I went to a game) it was $25 for the spaces near the park.  So much for walking.  I’m sure this year will see a raise in attendance but there will be more people going who will be buying less stuff but at the end of the year the numbers will all be more than the year before.  So get ready to take in your one or two games in person and then hopefully (who knows with this new TV deal) enjoy the rest of the games on TV.
